Instructions
Building on what we learned about Fact Families and basic addition/subtraction, this worksheet introduces how to add larger numbers using place value (Tens and Ones).
Remember to always keep your Tens and Ones organized!
Section 1: Review and Reinforcement
Now that you are an expert at one-digit math, solve these problems quickly.
-
Complete this subtraction problem from the Fact Family using 5, 14, and 9: $14 - 9 = $
-
Find the total sum of these three numbers (Hint: look for pairs that make 10 first): $2 + 8 + 6 = $
-
Maya had 16 colorful stickers. She gave 7 stickers away. How many stickers does she have left? Equation: Answer:
Section 2: Introducing Two-Digit Addition (No Regrouping)
When we add numbers larger than 9, we use columns called Ones and Tens. We always start by adding the numbers in the Ones column first.
Example: $23 + 4 = ?$
- We look at the Ones: $3 + 4 = 7$
- We look at the Tens: $2 + 0 = 2$
- Total is 27.
| Tens | Ones |
|---|---|
| 2 | 3 |
| + 0 | 4 |
| 2 | 7 |
Solve these addition problems. Remember to keep the columns straight!
-
$15 + 3 = $
-
$41 + 8 = $
-
$60 + 20 = $
-
$35 + 4 = $
Section 3: Vertical Addition Practice
Use the chart below to practice lining up your numbers correctly. Solve the Ones column first, then the Tens column. The first row is done for you.
