Instructions
- Read the Rules of the Code: Follow the descriptions for each Hangul (Korean alphabet) character. Notice how they are built using simple lines and circles.
- Trace and Write: Practice writing each character in the provided tables. Pay attention to the stroke order: generally top-to-bottom and left-to-right.
- Build Syllables: Combine consonants and vowels to create "syllable blocks."
- Solve the Vocabulary Quest: Match the Korean words to their meanings and practice writing them.
- Take the Challenge: Try the bonus translation at the end!
Part 1: The Foundation - Basic Vowels
In Korean, vowels are the "heart" of every word. They are made of three elements: the sky (dot/short line), the earth (horizontal line), and humans (vertical line).
| Vowel | Sound | Visual Hint | Practice Writing (3 times each) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ã… | "ah" | Like arm pointing out | |
| ã…“ | "eo" | Like up, but pointing in | |
| ã…— | "oh" | Like an oar on a boat | |
| ㅜ | "oo" | Like the oops under the line | |
| ã…£ | "ee" | Like a tree or a steep cliff | |
| ã…¡ | "eu" | Like a flat road on the ground |
Part 2: The Framework - Basic Consonants
Consonants are shaped like the mouth or tongue when making the sound!
- ㄱ (g/k): Like a gun or a corner.
- ã„´ (n): Like a nose or a 90-degree angle.
- ã… (m): A square mouth.
- ã…… (s): Like a mountain slope.
- ã…‡ (silent/ng): A round opening. (It is silent when at the start of a syllable).
The Syllable Lab
In Korean, letters aren't written in a straight line like English (B-A-N-A-N-A). They are stacked into blocks.
Rule: If a vowel is vertical (ã…, ã…“, ã…£), the consonant goes to the left. If a vowel is horizontal (ã…—, ã…œ, ã…¡), the consonant goes on top.
| Consonant | Vowel | Syllable Block | Sound | Practice |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ã„´ (n) | ã… (ah) | 나 | "Na" | |
| ㄱ (g) | ㅜ (oo) | 구 | "Gu" | |
| ã… (m) | ã…£ (ee) | 미 | "Mi" | |
| ㅅ (s) | ㅗ (oh) | 소 | "So" | |
| ã…‡ (silent) | ã…“ (eo) | ì–´ | "Eo" | |
| ã„´ (n) | ã…¡ (eu) | ëŠ | "Neu" |
Part 3: Vocabulary Quest
Now that you know how to build blocks, let's learn some real words. Use the chart below to practice writing common Korean words.
| Korean Word | Pronunciation | Meaning | Practice Writing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 나 | Na | I / Me | 나 나 나 |
| 나무 | Na-mu | Tree | |
| 어머니 | Eo-meo-ni | Mother | |
| ì•„ì´ | A-i | Child | |
| ì˜¤ì´ | O-i | Cucumber | |
| ìš°ìœ | U-yu | Milk |
Part 4: Interactive Challenge
A. Match the Word: Draw a line from the Korean word to its English meaning.
- 나무 (Na-mu) A. Milk
- 어머니 (Eo-meo-ni) B. Cucumber
- ìš°ìœ (U-yu) C. Tree
- ì˜¤ì´ (O-i) D. Mother
B. The Secret Code: Using the letters you've learned, can you try to spell your name phonetically in Korean blocks? (Hint: Use ã…‡ if your name starts with a vowel sound!)
My Name in Korean: ____
C. Advanced Explorer (Optional): In Korean, adding a small extra line to a vowel adds a "y" sound.
- ã… (ah) + line = ã…‘ (yah)
- ã…“ (eo) + line = ã…• (yeo)
If ìš°ìœ is "U-yu" (Milk), can you guess how to write the word for "Fox" (Yeo-u)?
Answer: ____
Answer Key
