Instructions
- Read carefully: Follow the step-by-step guides for each section to learn the secrets of magic.
- Think like a Magician: Use your English skills to explain tricks and your Math skills to calculate probabilities.
- Practice: Use a standard deck of 52 cards if you have one nearby, but you can complete this worksheet even without them!
- Complete the Challenge: Try the bonus question at the end to see if you are a Master Magician.
Section 1: The Magician's Vocabulary
Every professional magician uses special words. Look at the definitions below and match them to the correct magic term.
| Word | Definition | Your Guess (Write the Letter) |
|---|---|---|
| Patter | Example: The script or story a magician tells. | (Example) |
| 1. Sleight | A secret move or trick done with the hands. | |
| 2. Effect | What the audience sees happen (the "magic"). | |
| 3. Reveal | The final moment when the trick is shown. | |
| 4. Gimmick | A secret tool or special card used to help. | |
| 5. Deck | A full set of 52 playing cards. |
Section 2: The Reading Mind Reader (English)
Read the instructions for this simple trick called "The Bottom Peek." Then, answer the questions below.
The Trick: First, ask a friend to shuffle the cards. Take the deck back and look at the bottom card quickly while talking to them (this is your secret!). Remember that card. Next, ask your friend to pick any card from the middle. Tell them to look at it and put it on top of the deck. Finally, cut the deck in half so the bottom card is now sitting right on top of their card. You can now find their card by looking for the one right next to your secret card!
-
What is the very first thing you should do?
-
Why do you need to remember the bottom card?
-
The text says to look at the card "while talking to them." Why is talking a good distraction?
Section 3: The Card Counter's Table (Math)
Magicians need to know their deck. In a standard deck, there are 4 suits (Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, Spades). Each suit has 13 cards. Use multiplication or addition to fill in the missing numbers.
| Number of Suits | Cards per Suit | Total Cards |
|---|---|---|
| 2 (Red suits) | 13 | 26 (Example) |
| 1 (Spades) | 13 | |
| 3 (Hearts, Spades, Clubs) | 13 | |
| 4 (Full Deck) | 13 | |
| 2 Full Decks | 52 | |
| Half of a Full Deck | (52 ÷ 2) |
Section 4: Probability Power
Probability is the chance that something will happen. In a deck of 52 cards, there are 26 Red cards and 26 Black cards.
-
If you pick one card at random, what is the chance it will be Red?
- A) 1 out of 4
- B) 1 out of 2 (Half)
- C) 1 out of 52
-
There are 4 Aces in a deck. Which is harder: picking a Red card or picking an Ace?
-
Math Word Problem: A magician removes all the Hearts from a deck. How many cards are left in the deck? (Show your work: 52 - 13 = ?)
Section 5: Writing Your Patter
Every great trick needs a story (Patter). Imagine you are going to make a card "disappear." Write 3-4 sentences you would say to your audience to keep them excited and distracted while you do the trick.
Hint: Use words like "Believe," "Mystery," and "Impossible!"
Master Magician Challenge (Logic)
You have 5 cards in a row.
- The King is to the left of the Queen.
- The Ace is in the exact middle.
- The 2 is at the very end on the right.
- The Jack is between the Ace and the 2.
What is the order of the cards from left to right?
- ____ 2. ____ 3. Ace 4. ____ 5. 2
