The Story: A Sister on Guard

Long ago in Egypt, a mother had to hide her precious baby boy to keep him safe. She made a beautiful, waterproof basket out of bulrushes (river plants) and placed the baby inside it. Then, she gently set the basket among the tall reeds along the edge of the great Nile River.

But the baby was not alone! His big sister, Miriam, stood at a distance. She stayed very quiet, hiding in the tall grass. Her eyes never left the basket. She was watching to see what would happen to him.

Soon, the Princess of Egypt (Pharaoh's daughter) came down to the river to bathe. She spotted the basket and sent her maid to get it. When she opened it, the baby began to cry, and she felt sorry for him.

Miriam showed great bravery! She stepped out of her hiding place and asked the Princess, "Shall I go and find a nurse from the Hebrew women to look after the baby for you?" The Princess said yes! Miriam ran and got her own mother. Because of Miriam's courage and watchful eyes, Moses was saved and cared for by his own family.
