Instructions
Welcome to the Mind Gym! This worksheet is designed to stretch your brain using different types of cognitive challenges. Follow these steps to complete the workout:
- Read carefully: Lateral thinking and logic puzzles often hinge on small, specific details.
- Show your work: For the grid and resource puzzles, use the provided tables to organize your thoughts.
- Don't rush: If you get stuck, move to another section and come back to it with fresh eyes.
- Reflect: Complete the short reflection at the end to identify your personal thinking style.
Section 1: Lateral Thinking Warm-ups
Lateral thinking requires looking at a problem from unexpected angles. Read the scenario, think outside the box, and write your explanation below.
- Example Puzzle: A man pushes his car to a hotel and tells the owner he is bankrupt. Why?
- Example Answer: He is playing Monopoly and landed on a property with a hotel he cannot afford.
Puzzle 1: The Apple Dilemma
There are five apples in a basket. You have five friends, and you give each friend one apple. However, there is still one apple remaining in the basket. How is this possible?
- Your Answer:
Puzzle 2: The Twin Paradox
Two babies are born at the exact same moment on the exact same day of the exact same year to the exact same mother, yet they are not twins. How can this be?
- Your Answer:
Section 2: The Grid Logic Puzzle (The Teen Hangout)
Three teenagers—Alex, Jordan, and Taylor—each have one favorite hobby (Skateboarding, Photography, or Coding) and one favorite drink (Lemonade, Boba, or Iced Coffee). Use the clues below to determine who does what and what they drink.
The Clues:
- Taylor's favorite hobby is Photography.
- The person who loves Skateboarding always drinks Lemonade.
- Alex does not skate.
- The programmer (coder) does not drink Boba.
- Each person has a unique hobby and a unique drink.
Solve It Grid:
| Teen Name | Favorite Hobby | Favorite Drink |
|---|---|---|
| Example: Casey | Climbing | Water |
| Alex | ||
| Jordan | ||
| Taylor |
Section 3: Pattern Codebreaker
Decipher the pattern used to transform the words in the column on the left, then apply that exact pattern to fill in the blank cells in the table.
| Original Word | Coded Word | The Hidden Rule/Pattern |
|---|---|---|
| MIND (Example) | O K P F | Shift each letter by +2 positions in the alphabet (M->O, I->K, N->P, D->F) |
| BRAIN | ||
| THINK | ||
| SMART | ||

Section 4: The Survival Packing Challenge
You are prepping for a 3-day solo trek. Your pack has a strict weight limit of 15 lbs. You want to maximize the utility of your gear. Each item has a weight and a "Survival Value" score.
Goal: Select a combination of items that does not exceed 15 lbs while achieving the highest possible total Survival Value.
Available Gear List:
- A. Sleeping Bag: 6 lbs / 8 Value Points
- B. Water Purifier: 2 lbs / 9 Value Points
- C. First Aid Kit: 3 lbs / 7 Value Points
- D. Multi-tool: 1 lb / 5 Value Points
- E. Compact Tent: 8 lbs / 10 Value Points
- F. Dehydrated Rations: 3 lbs / 6 Value Points
Try Out Combinations:
Use this space to test different configurations before selecting your final pack.
| Strategy / Attempt | Items Selected (Letters) | Total Weight (Max 15 lbs) | Total Value Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example Attempt | A (Sleeping Bag) + E (Tent) | 14 lbs | 18 Points |
| Attempt 1 | |||
| Attempt 2 | |||
| Attempt 3 | |||

Section 5: Brain Reflection
Which type of puzzle felt most natural to your style of thinking (Lateral thinking, strict deduction grid, math/pattern recognition, or strategic resource optimization)? Why do you think your brain preferred that style?
- Write your thoughts here:
Answer Key
Section 1: Lateral Thinking
- Puzzle 1: You gave the fifth friend their apple while it was still inside the basket.
- Puzzle 2: They are triplets (or quadruplets, etc.), not just twins.
Section 2: The Grid Logic Puzzle
- Alex: Coding / Iced Coffee
- Jordan: Skateboarding / Lemonade
- Taylor: Photography / Boba
Deduction steps: Taylor does Photography (Clue 1). Alex doesn't skate (Clue 3), so Alex must do Coding, leaving Jordan with Skateboarding. Since Jordan skates, Jordan drinks Lemonade (Clue 2). Alex (the coder) does not drink Boba (Clue 4), so Alex must drink Iced Coffee. This leaves Taylor drinking Boba.
Section 3: Pattern Codebreaker
The rule is to shift every letter forward by 2 positions in the alphabet (+2).
- BRAIN -> D T C K P
- THINK -> V J K P M
- SMART -> U O C T V
- SOLVE -> U Q N X G
Section 4: Survival Packing Challenge
- The Optimal Selection: Items B, C, D, F, and A.
- Items: Water Purifier (2 lbs), First Aid Kit (3 lbs), Multi-tool (1 lb), Dehydrated Rations (3 lbs), Sleeping Bag (6 lbs).
- Total Weight: 2 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 6 = 15 lbs.
- Total Value Points: 9 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 8 = 35 points. (Note: This combination perfectly hits the 15 lbs limit and yields the maximum possible score of 35).
