Welcome, History Detective! Today, you are going to travel back in time to the year 1947 to solve one of the greatest archaeological mysteries of all time: The Discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Follow these steps to complete the worksheet:
- Read the historical mystery story in Part 1 and answer the detective questions.
- Match the ancient scroll messages with their modern-day meanings in Part 2.
- Solve the "Damaged Scroll" puzzle in Part 3 by filling in the missing words using your detective skills.
- Write a short creative journal entry in Part 4 imagining you made this incredible find.
Part 1: The Lost Shepherd and the Clattering Clay
In the spring of 1947, just after World War II, a young Bedouin shepherd boy named Muhammad al-Dhib was looking for a lost goat in the cliffs of the Judean Desert, near the Dead Sea.
To see if his goat was hiding inside a small, dark cave opening, he tossed a rock inside. Instead of a goat's bleat, he heard a loud CLINK-SHATTER!
Curious, he climbed inside. He didn't find gold or gems. Instead, he found tall clay jars. Inside the jars were rolls of ancient leather and papyrus wrapped in linen fabric. He had just stumbled upon the Dead Sea Scrolls—ancient religious writings hidden away for nearly 2,000 years! Because the desert cave was so dry and dark, these fragile papers survived without rotting away.

Part 2: The Isaiah Scroll Match-Up
The most famous scroll found was a giant, 24-foot-long scroll of the biblical book of Isaiah. Let's see what some of these ancient words mean.

Part 3: The Scribe's Challenge (Text Detective)
Many scrolls were torn, burnt, or had holes in them when they were found. Scholars had to use clues from other copies of the Bible to guess the missing words.

Part 4: Imagine & Reflect
