You are helping a wildlife team identify how a bird is adapted for flight and for life beside a river. The team has found a bird skeleton and needs your help explaining how its body works.

Quick Reference

Pneumatized bones are bones that contain air spaces connected to the bird's air-sac system. These bones can make the skeleton lighter while still providing support. Not every bird bone is hollow, and hollow bones alone do not make flight possible.

The keel is a deep ridge on the breastbone, or sternum. Powerful flight muscles attach to the keel. When these muscles contract, they move the wings.

The furcula is the wishbone-shaped bone made from two collarbones joined together. It helps support the shoulders and acts like a spring as the wings move.

Riverbank adaptations may help a bird find food, stay safe, move through water or mud, and take off quickly. Examples include waterproof feathers, long legs, webbed feet, strong claws, camouflage, and a pointed or specialized beak.
