1. Read the Story

Christopher Columbus was a sailor from Europe. In 1492, he sailed west across the Atlantic Ocean. He hoped to find a new route to Asia for trade.

Columbus sailed with three ships: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. After many weeks, the ships reached islands in the Caribbean Sea.

The islands were not empty. The Taíno people already lived there. They had families, homes, leaders, farms, and their own culture. Columbus called the land by names from his own language, but the Taíno people already had names for their islands.

Columbus was brave and did not give up easily. However, bravery does not make every action right. Some Europeans took land and people unfairly. Many Indigenous people were hurt, forced to work, or became sick. These actions were wrong.

From a Christian perspective, we can thank God for courage and learning while also telling the truth about harm. Jesus teaches us to love our neighbors. Every person is made by God and deserves kindness, freedom, and respect.
