Instructions

  1. Ava has a budget of $500 to spend on makeup products she wants.
  2. Research makeup products online or in local shops. Record the item, price, and shop or website where you found each product.
  3. Use reliable sources and check that prices are current. Do not include delivery charges unless you decide to include them in your budget.
  4. Add the prices carefully to find Ava’s total expenditure.
  5. Calculate how much money Ava has left and what percentage of her budget she has spent.
  6. Complete the English and research sections using full sentences and evidence from your research.
  7. Remember: This worksheet is about planning a budget. Ava does not need to buy every item.

Useful formulae

  • Total expenditure = add all item prices
  • Money left = $500 − total expenditure
  • Percentage spent = total expenditure ÷ 500 × 100
  • Percentage left = money left ÷ 500 × 100

Example: If Ava spends $100, she has $400 left. She has spent 20% of her budget because 100 ÷ 500 × 100 = 20%.

Section 1: Build Ava’s Makeup Wishlist

Find products from different shops or websites. The example row shows how to complete the table. Use the blank rows for your own research.

Makeup item Price Shop or website Why Ava wants it or what it is used for
Example: Lip gloss $12.00 Example Beauty Shop Adds shine and colour to the lips

Research Check

Answer in complete sentences.

  1. Which shop or website did you use most often? Why did you choose it?

  1. Choose one product from your table. What search words did you use to find it?

  1. What evidence suggests that the price is reliable and current? For example, did you check the product page, date, stock information, or another shop?

  1. Identify one piece of information a shopper should check before buying makeup online.

Section 2: Calculate the Expenditure

Write the prices from your wishlist below. Include the example only if Ava is actually choosing to buy it.

Item number Price
Example: Lip gloss $12.00
Item 1
Item 2
Item 3
Item 4
Item 5
Item 6

Show your calculation:

Ava’s total expenditure: $____

Ava’s money left:

$500.00 − $____ = $____

Money left: $____

Percentage of the budget spent:

$____ ÷ $500 × 100 = ____%

Percentage of the budget left:

$____ ÷ $500 × 100 = ____%

Section 3: Budget Decisions

Answer each question using your calculations.

  1. Is Ava’s wishlist within her $500 budget? Explain how you know.

  1. Which item costs the most? Is it good value for Ava? Give one reason.

  1. Which item costs the least? Would choosing the cheapest product always be the best decision? Explain.

  1. If Ava wants to keep at least $100, what is the greatest amount she may spend?

Answer: $____

  1. If Ava’s total is more than $400, choose one item she could remove or replace. Explain how this would help her budget.

Section 4: Maths Practice

Use the information below. Show your working.

Ava finds these five products:

Product Price
Foundation $28.50
Mascara $16.75
Blush $22.25
Eyeshadow palette $45.00
Makeup brushes $32.50
  1. Find the total cost of the five products.

  1. How much money would Ava have left from $500?

  1. What percentage of the $500 budget would she have spent? Round to the nearest whole percent.

  1. Ava finds a different mascara for $12.99. How much cheaper is it than the $16.75 mascara?

  1. Ava has a 10% discount voucher for the $45.00 eyeshadow palette. How much is the discount?

  1. What is the sale price of the eyeshadow palette after the discount?

Section 5: Compare and Evaluate

Compare two products that serve a similar purpose, such as two foundations, two lip products, or two mascaras.

Feature Product A Product B
Example: Price $15.00 $22.00
Shop or website
Price
Size or amount
Customer rating or review evidence
Important ingredients or features
Best reason to choose it

Write a recommendation in 4–6 sentences. State which product Ava should choose and support your opinion with at least two facts from your table.

Section 6: Final Budget Report

Write a short report for Ava. Include:

  • The total amount she plans to spend
  • The amount of money she will have left
  • Her most useful or important purchase
  • One product she could remove if she needed to save money
  • A clear recommendation about whether she should follow this plan

Optional Challenge

Ava must pay 8% sales tax on her total expenditure. Use your own wishlist total to calculate:

  1. Sales tax = total expenditure × 0.08
  2. Final cost = total expenditure + sales tax
  3. Money left after tax = $500 − final cost

Answer Key

Section 1: Wishlist and Research

Answers will vary because students may choose different products, prices, shops, and websites. Each completed row should include:

  • A clearly named makeup item
  • A price written in dollars and cents where possible
  • The shop or website where the item was found
  • A sensible explanation of the product’s purpose or appeal

A strong research answer names a specific source and explains how the student checked the information. For example: I checked the product page and the date of the search because prices and stock can change.

Section 2: Expenditure

Answers depend on the products selected.

  • Total expenditure = add every chosen price
  • Money left = $500 − total expenditure
  • Percentage spent = total expenditure ÷ 500 × 100
  • Percentage left = money left ÷ 500 × 100

The two percentages should add to approximately 100%. Small rounding differences are acceptable.

Section 3: Budget Decisions

  1. The wishlist is within budget if the total expenditure is $500 or less. It is over budget if the total is more than $500.
  2. The most expensive item is the item with the greatest price in the student’s table. The explanation should refer to quality, size, usefulness, ingredients, reviews, or personal preference.
  3. The cheapest item is the item with the lowest price. Choosing the cheapest product is not always best because quality, safety, size, ingredients, and suitability also matter.
  4. Ava may spend $400 if she wants to keep at least $100: $500 − $100 = $400.
  5. Answers will vary. The proposed change should reduce the total expenditure and keep the budget within the required limit.

Section 4: Maths Practice

  1. Total cost:

$28.50 + $16.75 + $22.25 + $45.00 + $32.50 = $145.00

  1. Money left:

$500.00 − $145.00 = $355.00

  1. Percentage spent:

$145 ÷ $500 × 100 = 29%

Answer: 29%

  1. Difference between the mascaras:

$16.75 − $12.99 = $3.76

  1. Discount on the eyeshadow palette:

$45.00 × 0.10 = $4.50

  1. Sale price:

$45.00 − $4.50 = $40.50

Section 5: Compare and Evaluate

Answers will vary. A strong response:

  • Compares two similar products
  • Uses accurate facts from the research table
  • Gives at least two reasons for the recommendation
  • Considers both price and product suitability
  • Uses complete sentences and clear linking words such as because, however, and therefore

Section 6: Final Budget Report

Answers will vary. A complete report includes all five requested points and uses the student’s calculated total and remaining money.

Optional Challenge

Use the student’s own total:

  • Sales tax = total expenditure × 0.08
  • Final cost = total expenditure + sales tax
  • Money left after tax = $500 − final cost

For the practice total of $145.00:

  • Sales tax = $145.00 × 0.08 = $11.60
  • Final cost = $145.00 + $11.60 = $156.60
  • Money left after tax = $500.00 − $156.60 = $343.40
