Instructions

  1. Plan a first-person TV review of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
  2. Decide what age rating you would give the series. You may use a familiar system, such as PG-13, 15, or 18, or invent your own rating system.
  3. Decide how many stars you would give it. Use a rating out of 5, 10, or another clear scale.
  4. Give at least three pieces of supporting evidence for your age rating. Consider violence, language, sexual content, drug use, frightening scenes, and mature themes.
  5. Write in the first person using words such as I, me, my, and in my opinion.
  6. Organize your ideas into an introduction, review paragraphs, and a conclusion. Use specific examples without retelling the entire plot.
  7. Complete the planning activities before writing your final review.

Learning goals: I can organize a review, support opinions with evidence, use first-person voice, and make a clear recommendation for an audience.

Section 1: Understand the Review Task

A strong TV review usually includes:

  • The title and basic information about the show
  • A brief summary without revealing major spoilers
  • An opinion about the story, characters, animation, music, or world-building
  • Evidence that supports each opinion
  • A clear age rating with at least three reasons
  • A star rating or another scoring system
  • A final recommendation

Useful sentence starters:

  • I expected the series to...
  • I found the world of Night City...
  • In my opinion, the strongest part was...
  • One example that supports my view is...
  • I would give this series a rating of...
  • I would recommend it to viewers who...
  • I would not recommend it to younger viewers because...

Section 2: Quick Review Notes

Complete the first row as an example. Then add your own notes.

Review feature Example My notes
Setting I found Night City exciting because it is full of technology, danger, and strong contrasts between rich and poor people.
Main character
Supporting character
Story or conflict
Animation and visual style
Music and sound
Overall reaction

Section 3: Evidence for an Age Rating

Choose an age rating before you collect evidence. Your rating should match the content you identify.

My age rating: __

My rating system means: __

For example, you might write: I would give it a 15 because it contains frequent animated violence, strong language, frightening scenes, and mature themes.

Complete the chart. The first row is an example.

Content area Specific evidence from the series Why this affects my age rating
Violence The series shows frequent, intense battles and characters being seriously injured. I think younger viewers may find these scenes disturbing, so the show should have a higher age rating.
Language
Sexual content or adult relationships
Drugs, alcohol, or risky behavior
Frightening images or mature themes
Other evidence

Check your evidence:

  • Did I include at least three different pieces of evidence?
  • Did I explain why each example affects the age rating?
  • Did I avoid simply listing content without explaining it?
  • Did I make a rating that matches my evidence?

Section 4: Plan Your Star Rating

Choose a rating system. You may use stars, points, grades, or your own creative system.

Optional Challenge

Create your own rating system with four categories. For example, you could rate Neon Style, Emotional Damage, Story Power, and Rewatch Value. Give each category a score and explain what the total means.

Then answer:

Would my rating change if I judged the series only for adults, rather than for younger viewers? Why or why not?

Answer Key

Answers will vary because this is an opinion-based writing task. Strong answers should meet the following requirements:

Section 2: Responses should include specific comments about characters, the story, animation, music, and the student’s overall reaction. Answers should explain opinions rather than use only single-word descriptions.

Section 3: A complete response should include at least three relevant pieces of evidence. Possible evidence includes:

  • Frequent animated violence, battles, injuries, and deaths
  • Strong or offensive language
  • Sexual references, nudity, or adult relationships
  • Drug use, alcohol, cybernetic modification, and risky behavior
  • Frightening images, psychological pressure, grief, exploitation, and other mature themes

The explanation should connect each example to the proposed age rating. For example: I would give the series a 15 because the violence is frequent and intense, the language is strong, and several themes are emotionally disturbing.

Section 4: Scores will vary. A strong answer gives a reason for each category and makes the final score match the student’s comments.

Section 5: A complete outline should include an introduction, story and character opinions, comments on style or entertainment, at least three age-rating reasons, and a conclusion with a recommendation.

Section 6: Possible answers include:

  1. I found the animation visually impressive.
  2. I think the violent scenes may be too intense for younger viewers.
  3. I found the main character easy to understand.
  4. I believe the series deserves four stars.

Section 7: A successful review should be organized, written mainly in the first person, supported by specific evidence, and finished with a clear age rating and overall recommendation.
