Read the following topics about space and answer the questions that follow. Provide detailed answers where necessary.
1. The Solar System
The solar system consists of the Sun and all the objects that are bound to it by gravity. This includes eight planets, their moons, dwarf planets, comets, and asteroids. The four inner planets are rocky and terrestrial: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The four outer planets are gas giants: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Question 1: List the planets in order from the Sun, and identify which ones are terrestrial and which are gas giants.
2. The Milky Way Galaxy
The Milky Way Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy, which contains billions of stars, as well as gas and dust. Our solar system is located in one of the outer spiral arms called the Orion Arm.
Question 2: Describe what type of galaxy the Milky Way is and where our solar system is located within it.
3. The Universe
The universe is vast and constantly expanding. It is made up of billions of galaxies. The observable universe is about 93 billion light-years in diameter. Scientists study the universe using telescopes and other instruments to learn about its origins, structure, and eventual fate.
Question 3: What methods do scientists use to study the universe, and what are they trying to learn?
4. Space Exploration
Space exploration involves the use of astronomy and space technologies to explore outer space. It includes manned missions, like those conducted by NASA, and unmanned missions, like rovers on Mars and space telescopes like Hubble.
Question 4: Provide an example of a manned and an unmanned space mission and explain their significance.
5. The Future of Space Travel
As technology advances, space travel is becoming more feasible. Companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin are working on making space travel accessible to civilians. Future projects might include Mars colonization and asteroid mining.
Question 5: Discuss what you think the future of space travel should focus on and why.
