Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3-year-old student will be able to explore basic mathematical concepts through Reggio inspired loose parts play.
Materials and Prep
- Assorted loose parts such as buttons, beads, shells, sticks, and small containers
- Large tray or play mat
- Optional: Magnifying glass
No specific prior knowledge is required for this lesson. The focus is on open-ended exploration and play.
Activities
- Sorting and Classifying: Encourage the student to sort the loose parts based on different attributes such as color, shape, size, or texture. Discuss the similarities and differences they observe.
- Patterning: Demonstrate how to create simple patterns using the loose parts. Start with a basic AB pattern (e.g., button, shell, button, shell) and encourage the student to continue the pattern or create their own.
- Counting and One-to-One Correspondence: Ask the student to count a specific type of loose part or group of loose parts. Provide guidance as needed and reinforce the concept of one-to-one correspondence (one number word for each object).
- Measurement: Introduce the concept of measurement by comparing the length or height of different loose parts using the student's hands or a non-standard measuring tool, such as sticks or shells.
Talking Points
- "Let's sort these buttons and beads. Can you find all the red buttons? How about the blue beads? Let's put them in separate piles."
- "Look at this pattern I made with the shells and sticks. Can you continue the pattern? What comes next?"
- "Can you count how many shells are in this container? Let's count them together, one by one."
- "Which stick is longer, the one with the shell or the one with the button? Let's compare them using our hands."
