Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will be able to creatively imagine and write hypothetical direct messages (DMs) between famous couples throughout history, developing their writing and critical thinking skills.

Materials and Prep

• Paper or digital writing platform
• Pens or pencils
• Access to information about famous couples throughout history

Before starting the lesson, the student should have a basic understanding of famous couples throughout history and be familiar with the concept of direct messages or texting in modern communication.

Activities

• Research and Choose: Have the student research and choose a famous couple from history or fiction that they find interesting. They can explore various time periods, cultures, and genres. Encourage them to select a couple that they can find enough information about to create realistic DMs.
• Create a DM Conversation: Instruct the student to imagine a modern-day scenario where the chosen couple has access to direct messaging. Ask them to create a conversation between the couple, considering their personalities, historical context, and any challenges they faced. Encourage creativity while maintaining some accuracy based on the couple's characteristics.
• Write the DMs: Have the student write out the conversation in the form of direct messages. They can use a paper and pen or a digital writing platform. Remind them to include timestamps, emojis, and any other elements that would be present in a real DM conversation.
• Peer Review: Once the DM conversation is complete, encourage the student to share it with a peer or family member for feedback. They can discuss the accuracy of the portrayal, the creativity of the conversation, and any improvements that can be made.
• Reflection and Discussion: Engage the student in a discussion about the process of creating the DM conversation. Ask them to reflect on the challenges they faced, the historical context they considered, and the overall experience of imagining a modern-day interaction between the chosen couple.
