Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to make a delicious sandwich all by yourself!

Materials and Prep

  • Bread
  • Sliced cheese
  • Sliced ham or turkey
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato slices
  • Mayonnaise or mustard
  • A plate
  • A butter knife

Make sure you wash your hands before handling any food.

Activities

  • Activity 1: Learn about the different ingredients. Look at the bread, cheese, ham or turkey, lettuce, tomato, and condiments. Smell and touch each item to explore their textures and scents.
  • Activity 2: Assemble a pretend sandwich. Use play food or cut out pictures from magazines to practice layering the ingredients and spreading condiments. Talk about the order of the ingredients and why it matters.
  • Activity 3: Make your own sandwich! Follow the steps below to create a real sandwich:
  1. Wash your hands again to make sure they're clean.
  2. Place two slices of bread on a plate.
  3. Spread mayonnaise or mustard on one or both slices of bread, depending on your preference.
  4. Add a slice of cheese on one slice of bread.
  5. Add a couple of slices of ham or turkey on top of the cheese.
  6. Place a few pieces of lettuce on top of the ham or turkey.
  7. Add a couple of tomato slices on top of the lettuce.
  8. Take the other slice of bread and place it on top of the tomato slices to complete the sandwich.
  9. Press the sandwich gently to make sure all the ingredients stick together.
  10. Enjoy your homemade sandwich!
