- Sliced ham or turkey
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Mayonnaise or mustard
- A plate
- A butter knife
Make sure you wash your hands before handling any food.
Activities
- Activity 1: Learn about the different ingredients. Look at the bread, cheese, ham or turkey, lettuce, tomato, and condiments. Smell and touch each item to explore their textures and scents.
- Activity 2: Assemble a pretend sandwich. Use play food or cut out pictures from magazines to practice layering the ingredients and spreading condiments. Talk about the order of the ingredients and why it matters.
- Activity 3: Make your own sandwich! Follow the steps below to create a real sandwich:
- Wash your hands again to make sure they're clean.
- Place two slices of bread on a plate.
- Spread mayonnaise or mustard on one or both slices of bread, depending on your preference.
- Add a slice of cheese on one slice of bread.
- Add a couple of slices of ham or turkey on top of the cheese.
- Place a few pieces of lettuce on top of the ham or turkey.
- Add a couple of tomato slices on top of the lettuce.
- Take the other slice of bread and place it on top of the tomato slices to complete the sandwich.
- Press the sandwich gently to make sure all the ingredients stick together.
- Enjoy your homemade sandwich!
