Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will learn about the Roman New Year and have fun engaging in activities related to it.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Markers or crayons
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • Optional: Roman-themed books or images

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a basic understanding of what New Year is and some knowledge about the ancient Romans.

Activities

  • Create a Roman New Year Crown: Cut a strip of construction paper long enough to fit around your head. Decorate it with markers or crayons to make it look like a crown. You can add symbols or drawings related to the Roman New Year.
  • Make a Roman Calendar: Take another piece of construction paper and draw a large circle on it. Divide the circle into 12 sections, like a clock. Each section represents a month. Write the names of the Roman months in each section. Decorate the calendar with colors and drawings.
  • Create a Fireworks Display: Cut out various shapes from construction paper to represent fireworks. Use different colors for each shape. Arrange them on another piece of paper to create a fireworks display. You can also draw or color additional fireworks.
  • Learn a Roman New Year Song: Look for a simple song or nursery rhyme related to the Roman New Year. Practice singing it together.
