Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and identify the Five Kingdoms of Living Things.
Materials and Prep
- Pen/pencil
- Paper
- Coloring materials (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Research and Draw: Research about each of the Five Kingdoms of Living Things (Animals, Plants, Fungi, Protists, and Monerans). Take notes on their characteristics and draw a representative example for each kingdom.
- Sorting Game: Create flashcards with pictures or names of different organisms. Sort them into the appropriate kingdom. You can use the drawings you made in the previous activity as a reference.
- Classify Your Surroundings: Take a nature walk or explore your backyard. Observe different organisms and try to classify them into the Five Kingdoms. Take pictures or make sketches of the organisms you find.
Talking Points
- Animals: Animals are living things that can move on their own. They can be as small as insects or as big as elephants. They include pets like cats and dogs, as well as wild animals like lions and tigers.
- Plants: Plants are living things that make their own food using sunlight, water, and air. They have roots, stems, and leaves. Examples of plants are trees, flowers, and grass.
- Fungi: Fungi are living things that cannot make their own food. They get their nutrients from other organisms. Mushrooms and molds are examples of fungi.
- Protists: Protists are tiny living things that can be found in water. They are usually single-celled organisms. Some protists, like algae, can make their own food through photosynthesis.
- Monerans: Monerans are the smallest living things. They are single-celled organisms that can only be seen under a microscope. Bacteria are examples of monerans.
