Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to understand where people live and the different types of buildings and constructions.

Materials and Prep

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Markers or crayons
  • Images or books showing different types of buildings and houses

Before the lesson, gather the materials and familiarize yourself with different types of buildings and houses.

Activities

  • Create a Neighborhood: Ask the student to use construction paper, scissors, and glue to create a neighborhood. They can cut out different shapes to represent houses, buildings, and other structures. Encourage them to be creative and add details using markers or crayons.
  • Match the Building: Show the student images or books with different types of buildings and houses. Cut out pictures of buildings and houses from magazines or print them from the internet. Ask the student to match the pictures to the correct names or descriptions. For example, they can match a picture of a skyscraper to the word "skyscraper."
  • Building Materials Sort: Prepare a variety of building materials such as blocks, Legos, wooden sticks, and cardboard. Have the student sort the materials into different groups based on their properties (e.g., hard, soft, heavy, light). Discuss why certain materials are better suited for specific types of buildings.
