Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a nature journal and understand how to observe and document changes in nature throughout the year.

Materials and Prep

  • A blank notebook or sketchbook
  • Pencils, colored pencils, or markers
  • A ruler
  • A calendar or access to monthly weather information
  • Access to outdoor areas

Before starting the lesson, make sure the student understands the concept of a journal and how to use basic art supplies.

Activities

  • Introduce the concept of a nature journal and explain its purpose. Discuss how it can be used to document observations and changes in nature throughout the year.

  • Guide the student to choose a suitable notebook or sketchbook for their nature journal. Discuss the importance of having enough blank pages for each month.

  • Using a ruler, help the student divide the notebook into sections for each month. Label each section with the corresponding month.

  • Encourage the student to spend time outdoors observing nature. They can choose a specific area or explore different locations throughout the year.

  • Guide the student to make regular entries in their nature journal. Encourage them to draw or sketch what they observe, write descriptions, and note any changes they notice.

  • At the end of each month, help the student reflect on their observations and discuss any patterns or trends they have noticed. This can be done through a conversation or by comparing entries from different months.
