Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 2-year-old student will be able to engage in imaginative play by pretending to run a grocery store and taking turns using a toy register.
Materials and Prep
- Toy register
No additional materials or prep are required for this lesson.
Activities
- Set up a pretend grocery store area using household items such as empty boxes, play food, and shopping baskets. Encourage the student to arrange the items and create their own store layout.
- Introduce the toy register to the student and demonstrate how to use it. Show them how to press the buttons and use the scanner to "ring up" items.
- Take turns with the student being the customer and the storekeeper. Use simple phrases like "Welcome to the grocery store!" and "How may I help you?" to encourage role-playing and conversation.
- Encourage the student to count the play money or play coins as they pretend to pay for their groceries. Help them recognize different numbers and practice basic counting skills.
- Discuss different types of food and their colors, shapes, and sizes. Ask the student questions like "What color is this apple?" or "Which fruit is bigger, the banana or the strawberry?" to promote language development and cognitive skills.
Talking Points
- "Let's pretend we are in a grocery store. What do you see in a grocery store?"
- "Can you show me how to use the toy register? Press the buttons and scan the items."
- "You can be the customer and I will be the storekeeper. How can I help you today?"
- "Let's count the play money together. How many coins do you have?"
- "What color is this fruit? Can you find another fruit that is the same color?"
