Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply arithmetic concepts to understand and solve dance-related problems.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil and paper
- Dance music (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Warm-up Dance Moves
Start by choosing a favorite dance move and perform it. Then, come up with four variations of that dance move. Write down the number of counts it takes to complete each variation. Add up the total number of counts for all five dance moves.
-
Counting Steps
Choose a dance routine or create your own. Count the number of steps or movements in the routine. Divide the total number of steps by the number of counts in a measure of music. This will help you determine how many measures are needed for the entire routine.
-
Calculating Dance Time
Select a dance song and find out its length in minutes. Convert the minutes into seconds. Count the number of dance steps you can perform in one minute. Multiply this number by the length of the song in seconds to calculate how many dance steps you can do throughout the entire song.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "In dance, arithmetic can be used to count beats, measures, and steps."
- "By understanding arithmetic concepts, we can calculate the length of a dance routine."
- "Arithmetic helps us determine how many dance steps we can perform in a given amount of time."
- "We can use arithmetic to compare and analyze different dance moves and variations."
- "Arithmetic helps us organize and structure our dance routines."
