Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 2-year-old homeschool student will have fun exploring nature during a bush walk while engaging in art, math, physical education, and science activities.
Materials and Prep
- Comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking
- A small backpack to carry collected items
- A sketchbook or plain paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- A water bottle
- A magnifying glass (optional)
Before the lesson, familiarize yourself with the local flora and fauna in the area where the bush walk will take place.
Activities
- Leaf Rubbings: Encourage the student to collect leaves of different shapes and sizes. Place a leaf under a sheet of paper and show the student how to gently rub a crayon or colored pencil over the paper to create a leaf impression.
- Nature Scavenger Hunt: Create a simple scavenger hunt list with items commonly found in nature, such as rocks, flowers, or birds. Help the student find and check off each item as they explore the bush.
- Animal Movements: Take breaks during the walk to imitate the movements of animals the student may encounter. For example, hop like a kangaroo, crawl like a lizard, or flap arms like a bird.
- Observation Journal: Encourage the student to observe and draw anything interesting they see during the bush walk. Assist them in labeling their drawings or writing simple descriptions.
- Sensory Exploration: Encourage the student to touch different textures, smell flowers, listen to bird sounds, and describe their experiences. Discuss the senses and how they help us understand the world around us.
Talking Points
- "Look at this leaf! Let's put it under the paper and color over it. Wow, it's making a cool shape on the paper!"
- "Can you find a rock? Great job! Let's check it off our list. What other items can we find in nature?"
- "Now let's pretend we are animals! Can you hop like a kangaroo? That's amazing!"
- "What did you see on our walk? Let's draw it in our journal. How would you describe it?"
- "This flower feels so soft! Can you smell it? What other things can we explore using our senses?"
