Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to count various kitchen items while following a recipe, and understand the concept of quantity and number recognition.

Materials and Prep

  • Bananas or other ingredients for a recipe (e.g., eggs, flour)
  • A banana bread recipe
  • A cutting board and knife (if using bananas)

Activities

  • Introduce the concept of counting by showing the student a bunch of bananas. Ask them to count how many bananas are in the bunch.

  • Together, read through the banana bread recipe and identify the ingredients needed. Have the student count each ingredient as you gather them.

  • If using bananas, ask the student to help you slice them. Count the number of slices together.

  • As you add the ingredients to a mixing bowl, have the student count each item as it goes in.

  • Throughout the baking process, ask the student to count the minutes on the timer or the number of times you stir the batter.

Talking Points

  • "Let's count how many bananas are in this bunch. Can you help me?"
  • "We need to gather the ingredients for our banana bread. Can you count how many eggs we need?"
  • "Now we have the bananas sliced. Let's count how many slices we have."
  • "We are adding the ingredients to the mixing bowl. Can you count how many cups of flour we added?"
  • "We need to bake the banana bread for a certain number of minutes. Can you count along with me on the timer?"
  • "Let's stir the batter. Can you count how many times we stir it?"
