Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the connection between math and visual arts, and appreciate the role of math in creating art.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Plain white paper
- Ruler
- Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, or markers)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Geometric Art
Using your ruler and pencil, draw different geometric shapes on your paper. Combine these shapes to create an interesting and unique artwork. Once you are done, color it using your coloring materials. Remember to be creative and use different colors!
-
Activity 2: Symmetry Art
Fold your paper in half vertically. On one side of the fold, draw a simple shape or object. Then, carefully fold the paper along the same line to create a mirror image of your drawing. Color both sides of the paper to create a symmetrical artwork.
-
Activity 3: Fibonacci Spiral
Start by drawing a small square on your paper. Then, draw a larger square next to it, using the side of the smaller square as one side of the larger square. Repeat this process, increasing the size of the square each time, to create a spiral shape. Once you finish drawing the spiral, color it in a way that showcases its beauty.
Fifth Grade Talking Points
- "Math and art may seem like different subjects, but they are actually closely connected."
- "Geometry, which is a branch of math, plays a significant role in creating visual arts."
- "Symmetry is an important concept in both math and art. It refers to a balanced arrangement of elements."
- "Artists often use mathematical concepts, such as proportion and scale, to create realistic or visually appealing artworks."
- "The Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical pattern, can be found in nature and is often used by artists to create aesthetically pleasing compositions."
