Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to explore the connection between Math and Visual Arts, and understand how mathematical concepts can be applied in creating and appreciating art.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Ruler
  • Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, or markers)

No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Geometric Art

Using your ruler and pencils, create a grid on a piece of paper. Choose a geometric shape (such as a triangle, square, or hexagon) and fill in the grid with that shape, repeating it in different colors or patterns. Observe how the repetition of shapes creates a visually appealing artwork.

  2. Activity 2: Symmetry in Nature

Go outside and find natural objects that exhibit symmetry, such as leaves, flowers, or seashells. Sketch one of these objects and identify its lines of symmetry. Discuss how symmetry can be found in both nature and art.

  3. Activity 3: Fibonacci Spiral

Research the Fibonacci sequence and the Fibonacci spiral. Using your ruler and pencils, draw a Fibonacci spiral on a piece of paper. Color it in using your preferred coloring materials. Discuss how the Fibonacci sequence and spiral can be seen in various natural and man-made objects.

Fifth Grade Talking Points

  • "Did you know that Math and Art are closely connected? Math is not just numbers and equations, it can also be used to create and appreciate beautiful artworks!"
  • "In Activity 1, we will explore how geometric shapes can be used to create visually appealing art. We will use grids and repetition to make our artwork interesting."
  • "Activity 2 will take us outside to observe symmetry in nature. We will sketch and identify lines of symmetry in natural objects like leaves, flowers, or seashells."
  • "Have you heard about the Fibonacci sequence? In Activity 3, we will learn about this special sequence and how it creates a spiral pattern. We will draw and color our own Fibonacci spiral."
  • "By exploring these activities, we will discover how Math and Art can work together to create amazing things. Let's get started!"
