Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create a Valentine heart family craft and understand the concept of love and family.
Materials and Prep
- Construction paper in various colors (red, pink, white)
- Scissors
- Glue
- Markers or crayons
- Pencil
Prior to the lesson, cut out heart shapes from the construction paper to save time.
Activities
- Create a heart family collage: Provide the student with the heart shapes and encourage them to arrange and glue them onto a larger piece of construction paper to create a family. They can draw faces and add details with markers or crayons.
- Heart family story: Read a children's book about families and love, such as "The Family Book" by Todd Parr. Discuss the different types of families and the importance of love within a family.
- Heart family handprints: Trace the student's hand on a piece of construction paper and cut it out. Help them glue the hand cutout onto a larger piece of paper and decorate it with hearts. Talk about how hands can show love and help families.
- Heart family puzzle: Cut out a large heart shape from construction paper and then cut it into several smaller pieces. Have the student put the pieces back together to form the heart family. Discuss how each piece represents a family member and how they fit together to create a whole.
