Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create and fly paper airplanes, while also learning about different subjects such as Art, English, History, Math, Physical Education, and Science.
Materials and Prep
- Several sheets of paper
- Coloring materials (crayons, markers, colored pencils)
- Access to books or online resources about airplanes and aviation history
- A clear open space for flying the paper airplanes
Activities
- Create and decorate paper airplanes using the sheets of paper and coloring materials.
- Read a book or explore online resources about airplanes and aviation history.
- Practice flying the paper airplanes in the open space, experimenting with different designs and techniques.
- Measure the distance each paper airplane flies and record the results.
- Discuss and compare the different flight distances of the paper airplanes.
Talking Points
- Planes can be made out of paper, just like the ones we are going to make today. They can fly in the air!
- We can use our creativity to decorate the paper airplanes with colors and patterns. What colors do you want to use?
- Did you know that people have been flying in airplanes for a long time? We can learn about the history of airplanes and the first people who flew them.
- When we throw our paper airplanes, they will fly through the air. We can try different ways of throwing them to see which goes the farthest. Let's count how many steps it takes to get to where the airplane landed.
- After we fly our paper airplanes, we can compare the distances they traveled. Which one went the farthest? Why do you think that happened?
