Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand the basics of downhill mountain bike riding and have fun practicing various skills.

Materials and Prep

  • A mountain bike suitable for downhill riding
  • A helmet and other protective gear (knee pads, elbow pads, etc.)
  • A safe outdoor location with a downhill slope

Before starting the lesson, make sure you have a good understanding of bike safety rules and proper riding techniques.

Activities

  • Warm-up exercises: Start with a light jog or some dynamic stretches to prepare your muscles for riding.
  • Bike handling practice: Set up a short obstacle course with cones or markers to work on your bike handling skills. Practice turning, braking, and navigating tight spaces.
  • Downhill riding technique: Find a suitable downhill slope and practice descending with proper body positioning. Focus on keeping your weight centered, looking ahead, and using your brakes effectively.
  • Jumping practice: If you have access to a small jump or ramp, practice getting some air. Start with small jumps and gradually increase the difficulty as you feel comfortable.
  • Trail ride: Take your bike for a ride on a beginner-level downhill trail. Focus on applying the skills you learned during the lesson and enjoy the thrill of riding in a natural environment.
