Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own paper mache project using different types of glues.

Materials and Prep

  • Newspaper or scrap paper
  • Water
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • PVA glue
  • White glue
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paints (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Container for mixing
  • Apron or old clothes to protect from mess

Make sure to cover the work area with a plastic tablecloth or newspaper to protect it from glue mess.

Activities

  1. Create the paper mache paste by mixing equal parts flour and water in a container. You can add a pinch of salt to prevent mold growth.

  2. Tear or cut the newspaper or scrap paper into small strips or shapes.

  3. Dip the paper strips into the paper mache paste, making sure they are fully coated.

  4. Apply the paper strips to a chosen object or mold, such as a balloon or cardboard shape, layering them to create a solid structure. Leave a small opening for removing the mold later.

  5. Allow the paper mache project to dry completely, which may take a day or two depending on the thickness.

  6. Once dry, carefully remove the mold from the paper mache structure.

  7. Decorate the paper mache project using paints or other decorative materials if desired.
