Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to create their own paper mache project using different types of glue.
Materials and Prep
- Newspaper or scrap paper
- Water-based glue
- Flour
- Water
- Bowl
- Paintbrush
- Optional: Balloon or cardboard base for paper mache project
Make sure to cover the work area with old newspapers or plastic to protect surfaces.
Activities
- Create paper mache paste: Mix equal parts of water-based glue and flour in a bowl until it forms a smooth, paste-like consistency.
- Tear newspaper or scrap paper into small strips.
- Dip the strips into the paper mache paste, making sure they are fully coated.
- Begin layering the coated strips onto the optional balloon or cardboard base, shaping it into the desired form (e.g., animal, mask, or bowl).
- Continue adding layers of paper mache, allowing each layer to dry before adding the next one.
- Once the paper mache project is dry and sturdy, it can be painted and decorated.
