Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand and effectively use Tier 1 and Tier 2 words in familiar contexts.

Materials and Prep

  • No additional materials required
  • Make sure you are in a quiet and comfortable learning environment

Activities

  • Word Hunt: Look around your house or outside and find objects that represent Tier 1 and Tier 2 words. For example, find a toy car (Tier 1) and a microscope (Tier 2). Talk about the objects and their names.

  • Story Time: Read a storybook together and pause whenever you come across a new word. Discuss the meaning of the word and ask the student to use it in a sentence. Encourage creativity!

  • I Spy: Play a modified version of "I Spy" where you describe an object using Tier 1 or Tier 2 words. For example, "I spy with my little eye something that is red and juicy. It grows on trees and you can eat it." The student then guesses the word (apple).

  • Picture Flashcards: Prepare flashcards with pictures of various objects. Show each flashcard to the student and ask them to name the object. For Tier 2 words, provide a simple definition or explanation.

  • Word Building: Use magnetic letters or letter blocks to build Tier 1 and Tier 2 words. Encourage the student to sound out the letters and blend them together to form the word. Repeat this activity with different words.

Talking Points

  • "Today, we are going to learn new words and how to use them in sentences."

  • "Tier 1 words are basic words that we use every day, like 'dog' or 'cat'."

  • "Tier 2 words are a little more advanced, like 'explore' or 'observe'. They help us describe things in more detail."

  • "Let's go on a Word Hunt and find objects that represent Tier 1 and Tier 2 words. Can you find a toy car or a microscope?"

  • "When we read a storybook, we might come across new words. We will pause and talk about the meaning of those words. Can you use one of the new words in a sentence?"

  • "In our modified version of 'I Spy', we will describe objects using words. For example, I might say 'I spy with my little eye something that is red and juicy'. Can you guess what it is?"

  • "Now, we have some picture flashcards. I will show you a picture, and you need to tell me what the object is. If it's a Tier 2 word, I will give you a simple explanation."

  • "Let's practice building words using magnetic letters or blocks. Can you sound out the letters and blend them together to form the word? Great job!"

  • "Remember, the more words we know, the better we can express ourselves and understand others. Let's keep learning new words every day!"
