Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to select and use materials, tools, and equipment to develop solutions for a need or opportunity.

Materials and Prep

  • Various materials such as paper, cardboard, tape, scissors, markers, etc.
  • A designated workspace for the student to work on their projects
  • Optional: Access to a computer with design software (e.g., Tinkercad, SketchUp, etc.)

Activities

  1. Activity 1: Identify a Need or Opportunity

Encourage the student to think about a problem they encounter in their daily life or an opportunity for improvement. It could be something like organizing their desk, creating a new toy, or finding a solution to a common household chore.

  2. Activity 2: Brainstorming and Research

Guide the student to brainstorm different ideas and solutions for their identified need or opportunity. They can use sketching, online research, or even consult with others for inspiration.

  3. Activity 3: Design and Prototyping

Using the selected materials and tools, have the student create a prototype of their solution. They can start with rough sketches, then move on to constructing a physical model using the available materials.

  4. Activity 4: Testing and Iteration

Encourage the student to test their prototype and evaluate its effectiveness. Based on the results, they can make improvements or modifications to their design. This iterative process helps them refine their solution.

  5. Activity 5: Presentation and Reflection

Ask the student to present their final design and explain how it addresses the identified need or opportunity. They can reflect on the challenges they faced, what they learned, and any future improvements they would make.
