Objective
The objective of this lesson is to introduce the concept of identifying needs and developing solutions. By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to understand that problems or needs can be solved by coming up with creative ideas and solutions.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Crayons or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Tape or glue
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Brainstorming Solutions
Ask the student to think about a problem or need they have encountered before. It could be something simple like not being able to reach a toy on a high shelf or not having a place to store their art supplies. Encourage them to come up with as many solutions as possible for each problem.
-
Design and Build
Once the student has brainstormed some solutions, have them choose one idea and draw a picture of what their solution would look like. Afterward, provide them with the necessary materials to build a prototype of their solution. Let them use their imagination and creativity in constructing their prototype.
-
Presentation and Reflection
Ask the student to present their solution to you or a family member. Have them explain how their solution addresses the identified problem or need. Afterward, have a discussion about the process of identifying a need and developing a solution. Ask questions like "What other problems could this solution solve?" or "How could you improve your solution?"
