Objective
By the end of this lesson, the 3-year-old student will be able to use building blocks to create simple structures and describe them using basic English vocabulary.
Materials and Prep
- Building blocks
- A clear space to play and build
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Free Play: Allow the student to explore the building blocks freely, encouraging them to build whatever they like. Observe their creations and ask them questions about what they have built.
- Color Sorting: Ask the student to sort the blocks by color. Use simple color vocabulary like "red," "blue," and "yellow." Encourage them to say the color names out loud as they sort.
- Counting Blocks: Ask the student to count how many blocks they have. Help them practice counting from one to ten using the blocks as visual aids.
- Shape Recognition: Show the student different block shapes (e.g., square, triangle, rectangle) and ask them to identify the shapes. Encourage them to describe the shapes using simple English words like "big," "small," "pointy," and "curvy."
- Building Together: Collaborate with the student to build a simple structure using the blocks. Use descriptive language to talk about the process, such as "Let's put the blue block on top of the red block."
Talking Points
- "Look at the blocks! They come in different colors like red, blue, and yellow."
- "Can you count how many blocks you have? Let's count together: one, two, three..."
- "What shape is this block? It's a square! Can you find another square block?"
- "Let's build a tower together! We can put the big block on the bottom and the small block on top."
