Objective

By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to recognize and count different shapes and colors of building blocks.

Materials and Prep

  • Building blocks of various shapes and colors
  • A clear workspace or play area
  • Enthusiasm and patience!

Activities

  • Sorting Shapes: Ask the student to sort the building blocks by their shapes. Encourage them to name the shapes as they sort.
  • Matching Colors: Ask the student to find blocks of the same color and stack them together. Help them name the colors as they match.
  • Building Towers: Encourage the student to build towers using the blocks. Count the number of blocks in each tower together.
  • Patterning: Create simple patterns using the blocks (e.g., red, blue, red, blue). Ask the student to continue the pattern.

  • "Today, we are going to have so much fun with building blocks!"
  • "Let's start by sorting the blocks. Can you find all the blocks that are shaped like squares?"
  • "Great job! Now let's match the blocks by their colors. Can you find two blocks that are the same color?"
  • "Wow, you're becoming a pro at building towers! Let's count how many blocks are in your tower."
  • "Now, let's create a pattern using the blocks. We'll start with red, then blue. Can you continue the pattern?"
