Objective

By the end of this lesson, the homeschool student will have a basic understanding of mycology and mushroom cultivation, and will be able to engage in hands-on activities related to growing mushrooms.

Materials and Prep

  • Mushroom growing kit or mushroom spores
  • A clean, well-ventilated space for mushroom cultivation
  • Water spray bottle
  • Plastic bags or containers for growing mushrooms
  • Access to mushroom identification books or websites
  • Access to internet for research

Prior knowledge of basic biology and plant growth would be helpful but not necessary.

Activities

  1. Research different types of mushrooms and their characteristics.

    Encourage the student to explore various resources, such as books or websites, to learn about different types of mushrooms, their habitats, and unique features.

  2. Grow mushrooms from a kit or spores.

    Guide the student through the process of setting up a mushroom growing kit or starting from spores. Explain the importance of maintaining proper temperature, humidity, and cleanliness for successful mushroom cultivation.

  3. Observe and document the growth of mushrooms.

    Encourage the student to regularly check and record the growth of mushrooms. Discuss the stages of mushroom development and any changes observed over time.

  4. Identify wild mushrooms (if safe and available).

    Teach the student how to identify different types of mushrooms in the wild, emphasizing the importance of caution and consulting expert sources for accurate identification.

  5. Create mushroom-based recipes.

    Explore culinary possibilities with mushrooms by researching and trying out different recipes. Encourage the student to experiment with flavors and textures.
