Materials and Prep

  • Sketchbook or drawing paper
  • Pencils, erasers, and sharpeners
  • Colored pencils or markers
  • Watercolor paints and brushes
  • Acrylic paints and brushes
  • Assorted papers (construction paper, tissue paper, etc.)
  • Scissors and glue
  • Old magazines or newspapers for collage
  • Any other art supplies the student may have
  • A clean workspace

Prior knowledge required: Basic drawing skills and familiarity with different art materials.

Activities

  1. Create a mixed media collage:

Encourage the student to cut out images and shapes from magazines or newspapers and glue them onto a piece of paper or canvas. They can then use colored pencils or markers to add their own drawings or designs to the collage.

  2. Experiment with watercolor techniques:

Have the student explore different watercolor techniques such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry brush. They can create a series of small paintings using these techniques and observe the effects and differences between them.

  3. Create a self-portrait using acrylic paints:

Ask the student to paint a self-portrait using acrylic paints. They can start with a sketch and then apply layers of paint, experimenting with blending colors and adding texture to their artwork.

  4. Explore abstract art:

Encourage the student to create an abstract artwork using any materials and techniques they prefer. They can experiment with different mark-making tools, textures, and colors to express their emotions or ideas in a non-representational way.
