Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to talk and interact well with friends and grown-ups, using the right words and ways of talking. You will also be able to recognize different sounds in spoken words, read written words, and write sentences that make sense.

Materials and Prep

  • Paper and crayons
  • A children's book or story
  • Flashcards with simple and advanced words

Activities

  1. Word Sound Hunt: Go on a sound hunt around your house. Find objects that have the same sound at the beginning or end of their names. For example, find things that start with the "b" sound like "ball" or "book". Draw pictures of the objects and write their names.
  2. Story Retelling: Read a story together and then ask the student to retell the story using their own words. Encourage them to use the right words and ways of talking when retelling the story.
  3. Flashcard Game: Show the flashcards with simple and advanced words to the student. Have them identify the words and explain their meanings. Then, ask them to use the words in sentences.
  4. Writing Practice: Provide the student with a writing worksheet. Ask them to write sentences that talk about at least two connected ideas. Help them with spelling and encourage them to use what they know about sounds and word structure.

Talking Points

  • When we talk to our friends and grown-ups, we use the right words and ways of talking. We can say "please" and "thank you" to be polite, and we can say "excuse me" when we want to get someone's attention.
  • Today, we are going to listen carefully to different sounds in words. We will play a game where we find objects that have the same sound at the beginning or end of their names.
  • After we read a story together, I want you to tell me what the story was about. You can use your own words and talk about the characters and what happened in the story.
  • Let's play a game with flashcards! I will show you words, and I want you to tell me what they mean. Then, you can use the words in sentences to show that you understand them.
  • Writing is an important skill. Today, we will practice writing sentences. Remember to use what you know about sounds and word structure to spell the words correctly.
