Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to correctly spell words they have been taught, write both big and small letters to make words and sentences, and engage in a related activity after hearing a story.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencils or crayons
- A book or story to read
Activities
- Activity 1: Spelling Practice
- Activity 2: Sentence Building
- Activity 3: Storytelling and Acting
Ask the student to spell out simple words that they have been taught. Provide them with the correct spelling if needed. Encourage them to write the words on paper using both big and small letters.
Give the student a sentence to recreate using cut-out letters or by writing them on paper. Help them arrange the letters in the correct order to form the sentence. Encourage them to read the sentence aloud once it is complete.
Read a story to the student and ask them questions about the characters and events. Encourage them to act out a scene from the story or draw a picture related to it.
Talking Points
- Spelling Practice:
- "Let's practice spelling some words together. Can you spell the word 'cat'? C-A-T, that's correct! Good job!"
- "Now, try spelling the word 'dog'. D-O-G, well done! You're getting really good at this!"
- Sentence Building:
- "We are going to build a sentence together. Let's make the sentence 'I like to play'. Can you find the letter 'I'? Great! Now find 'l', 'i', 'k', 'e', 't', 'o', 'p', 'l', 'a', 'y'. Perfect! Now let's read the sentence we made."
- Storytelling and Acting:
- "I have a fun story to read to you. It's about a little bear who goes on an adventure. What do you think will happen in the story?"
- "After we finish reading the story, let's act out one of the scenes together. Which part would you like to play?"
