Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will have constructed a model of the solar system and gained a deeper understanding of the planets and their positions.

Materials and Prep

Materials needed: Styrofoam balls, paint, paintbrushes, string, markers, glue, scissors, and a large sheet of paper. Prior knowledge: Basic understanding of the planets in our solar system.

Activities

1. Research: Look up information about each planet and their characteristics.

2. Model Construction: Paint the Styrofoam balls to represent each planet, then use string to hang them in the correct order from the Sun on the large sheet of paper.

3. Labeling: Use markers to label each planet with its name and key features.

  • Making the Sun: "The Sun is the center of our solar system and provides light and heat to all the planets."
  • Planet Order: "Remember the order of the planets from the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune."
  • Planet Characteristics: "Each planet has unique characteristics, such as size, composition, and atmosphere."
  • Scale: "In our model, the sizes of the planets will not be to scale, but their distances from the Sun will be in the correct order."
