Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to construct a mechanical model of the solar system and understand the relative positions and movements of the planets.

Materials and Prep

  • Cardboard
  • Colorful markers
  • String
  • A small light source (like a flashlight)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Ruler
  • Glue
  • Printed images of the planets
  • Pencil

No prior knowledge is required for this lesson, just come with a curious mind!

Activities

  • Create a scale model of the solar system on cardboard. Use the images of the planets to draw and cut out their shapes.

  • Label each planet with its name and position from the sun. Use the ruler to measure the distances accurately.

  • Attach the planets to the string in the correct order, starting from the sun. Hang the string from a fixed point and observe the model from different angles.

  • Use the small light source to represent the sun and see how the shadows cast by the planets change as they orbit around it.

Talking Points

  • Our solar system consists of the sun and eight planets that orbit around it.

  • "The sun is like the star of our solar system, and the planets revolve around it in specific paths called orbits."

  • "Each planet has a unique size, composition, and position from the sun. This affects how they move in space."

  • "The distances between the planets are vast, and it takes a long time for them to complete one orbit around the sun."
