Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to construct a mechanical model of the solar system and understand the relative sizes and distances of the planets.

Materials and Prep

  • Cardboard or Styrofoam balls of various sizes
  • Paints or markers
  • String or wire
  • Scissors and glue
  • Ruler and pencil
  • Reference materials on the solar system

No prior knowledge needed, just a curious mind!

Activities

  • Create a scale model of the solar system using the materials provided. Paint or mark each planet to represent its unique characteristics.
  • Research the sizes and distances of the planets from the sun, and adjust your model accordingly to maintain accuracy.
  • Hang your model from the ceiling or display it on a shelf to showcase your work and understanding of the solar system.

Talking Points

  • Quotation: "The solar system consists of the sun and the celestial objects that orbit it, including planets, moons, asteroids, and comets."
  • Quotation: "The inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, are rocky and have relatively small sizes compared to the outer gas giants."
  • Quotation: "Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system, while Saturn is known for its beautiful rings made of ice and rock particles."
  • Quotation: "Uranus and Neptune are the ice giants, located much farther from the sun compared to the inner planets."
  • Quotation: "Pluto, once considered the ninth planet, is now classified as a dwarf planet due to its small size and irregular orbit."
  • Quotation: "Constructing a model helps us visualize the vastness of space and the unique characteristics of each planet in our solar system."
