Objective
By the end of this lesson, the student will be able to describe observable features of living things and their environments.
Materials and Prep
- Pen and paper
- Access to outdoor space or pictures of nature
- No prior knowledge needed
Activities
- Nature Walk: Take a walk in your backyard or a nearby park. Observe plants, animals, and any other living things you see. Make sketches or take notes of their features.
- Living vs. Non-Living: Look around your house and identify objects that are living and non-living. Discuss the observable features that help you differentiate between the two.
- Environment Collage: Collect pictures from magazines or print them from the internet. Create a collage showing different environments and the living things that inhabit them. Label the features you observe.
Talking Points
- Living Things: "Living things grow, reproduce, and respond to their environment. They need food, water, and air to survive."
- Observing Nature: "When observing living things, pay attention to their size, shape, color, movement, and any unique features they have."
- Adaptations: "Living things have adaptations that help them survive in their environment. These can be physical features or behaviors."
- Interdependence: "Living things depend on each other and their environment. Changes in one part of an ecosystem can affect the whole system."
