Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to apply an understanding of place value and the role of zero to represent numbers up to at least tens of thousands.
Materials and Prep
- Paper and pencil
- Number cards (0-9)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson.
Activities
- Place Value Buildings: Create buildings using number cards to represent the place value of each digit in a number. For example, for the number 23, use 2 cards for the tens and 3 cards for the ones.
- Zero Detective: Investigate the role of zero in numbers. Ask questions like "What happens when you add zero to a number?" or "How does zero affect the value of a number?"
- Number Hunt: Hide number cards around the house and have the student find them. Once found, ask the student to create a number using the cards and explain its place value.
Talking Points
- What is place value?
"Place value helps us understand the value of each digit in a number. It tells us where the digit belongs in the number." - Why is zero important in numbers?
"Zero helps us to show that there is no value in a place. It acts as a placeholder to help us understand the value of other digits." - Can you give an example of place value in a number?
"In the number 36, the 3 represents 30 (tens place) and the 6 represents 6 (ones place)." - How does zero change the value of a number?
"When we add zero to a number, it doesn't change the value of the number. It just helps us to position the other digits correctly."
