Objective

By the end of this lesson, you will understand how adding or removing heat can change the state of matter.

Materials and Prep

  • Ice cubes
  • Stove or hot plate (with adult supervision)
  • Pot or pan
  • Water
  • Timer

No prior knowledge needed, just be curious and ready to explore!

Activities

  • Activity 1: Melting Ice Cubes - Take an ice cube and observe what happens when you leave it out at room temperature.
  • Activity 2: Boiling Water - Watch water boil on the stove and observe how it changes from a liquid to a gas.
  • Activity 3: Freezing Water - Put a pot of water in the freezer and check on it periodically to see it turn into ice.

Talking Points

  • When something gets hot, it can change from a solid to a liquid. You can say, "When we heat up ice, it turns into water."
  • When we cool something down, it can change from a liquid to a solid. You can say, "When we freeze water, it turns into ice."
  • Water can also change into a gas when it gets really hot. You can say, "When we boil water, it turns into steam."
  • Adding heat makes molecules move faster, and removing heat makes them move slower. You can say, "Heat makes things go zoom, and cold makes them slow down."
