Objective

By the end of this lesson, Koalas will have explored creativity through sensory play with sand dough and natural materials.

Materials and Prep

  • Sand dough (homemade using sand and flour)
  • Natural materials (leaves, twigs, flowers)
  • Large plastic mat for easy cleanup
  • Small containers for mixing
  • Apron or old clothes for Koalas

No special preparations needed, just ensure a safe and spacious play area.

Activities

  • Create sand dough together by mixing sand and flour with water. Encourage Koalas to feel the texture and explore the mixture.
  • Use natural materials to decorate the sand dough creations. Talk about the different colors and textures of the items found in nature.
  • Encourage Koalas to make imprints of the natural materials in the sand dough. Discuss the shapes and patterns created.
  • Engage in a group play activity where Koalas can share their creations with others and talk about what they made.

Talking Points

  • “Look at the sand dough, it feels squishy and cool!”
  • “Let’s put some leaves on top, what color are they?”
  • “Press the twig into the dough, see the mark it makes?”
  • “Can you show me what you made? It’s so pretty!”
