Objective
By the end of this lesson, the first-grade student will be able to understand and apply basic arithmetic concepts, such as addition and subtraction, using fun and engaging activities.
Materials and Prep
- Pencil
- Blank paper
- Counting objects (e.g., buttons, beans, or small toys)
No prior knowledge or preparation is required for this lesson.
Activities
-
Activity 1: Counting Fun
Ask the student to count objects around the house, such as toys, books, or utensils. Encourage them to write down the numbers as they count. After counting, have them draw a picture representing the total number of objects they counted.
-
Activity 2: Addition Challenge
Give the student a set of counting objects. Ask them to pick a certain number of objects and then add more to the set. For example, they can start with 3 buttons and add 2 more. Have them count the total number of objects and write down the addition sentence (e.g., 3 + 2 = 5).
-
Activity 3: Subtraction Adventure
Provide the student with another set of counting objects. Ask them to take away a certain number of objects from the set. For instance, they can start with 6 beans and take away 3. Have them count the remaining objects and write down the subtraction sentence (e.g., 6 - 3 = 3).
First Grade Talking Points
- "Math is all about numbers and counting. It helps us understand and solve problems."
- "When we count, we say numbers in order, like 1, 2, 3, 4, and so on."
- "Adding means putting things together. For example, if we have 2 apples and add 3 more, we have a total of 5 apples."
- "Subtracting means taking away. If we have 6 cookies and eat 2, we are left with 4 cookies."
- "We can use numbers and symbols like + and - to write addition and subtraction sentences."
