Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to ask scientific questions, plan and conduct investigations, collect and summarize data, and communicate using scientific representations.
Materials and Prep
Materials: paper, pencil, ruler, various objects for investigation (e.g., coins, toys, fruits), access to a computer or tablet for research.
Prep: None
Activities
1. Ask a Question: Think of a question you have about the objects around you. Write it down.
2. Plan Your Investigation: Make a plan on how you will find the answer to your question. Draw a diagram if needed.
3. Conduct Your Investigation: Follow your plan and collect data by measuring, observing, or experimenting.
4. Summarize Your Data: Record your findings in a table, chart, or graph. What did you discover?
5. Communicate Your Results: Create a poster, presentation, or video to share your question, investigation, and findings with others.
Talking Points
- Asking Questions: "It's important to ask questions about things we're curious about. What question do you want to investigate today?"
- Planning Investigations: "Before we start, let's make a plan on how we can find the answer to your question. What steps should we take?"
- Conducting Investigations: "Now it's time to collect data. Let's measure, observe, or experiment with the objects you chose."
- Summarizing Data: "Let's summarize what we found. How can we organize our data to better understand the results?"
- Communicating Results: "It's time to share your discoveries with others. How will you present your question and findings in a fun way?"
