Objective
By the end of this lesson, KAUATOA will be able to confidently play games involving decimals and fractions, improving their understanding and skills in these areas.
Materials and Prep
- Paper
- Pencil
- Colorful markers or pens
- Calculator (optional)
No prior knowledge is required for this lesson, just come with a positive attitude and willingness to learn!
Activities
- Decimal Bingo: Create Bingo cards with decimal numbers. Call out fractions and have KAUATOA mark the corresponding decimal on their card. The first to get a Bingo wins!
- Fraction War: Use a deck of cards with fractions. KAUATOA and the teacher each draw a card, convert the fraction to a decimal, and compare. The one with the larger decimal wins the round!
- Decimal Art: Assign decimal values to different colors. Have KAUATOA solve decimal problems to know which color to use, then create a beautiful decimal art piece!
Talking Points
- Decimals and fractions: "Decimals and fractions are like cousins in the math world. They help us understand parts of a whole in different ways."
- Comparing decimals: "When comparing decimals, think about place value. The decimal closer to the whole number is larger."
- Converting fractions to decimals: "To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator. It's like slicing a pizza into smaller pieces!"
- Adding and subtracting decimals: "When adding or subtracting decimals, line up the decimal points to keep things organized. It's just like stacking blocks!"
- Practice makes perfect: "The more you play games and solve problems with decimals and fractions, the better you'll get at them. So, let's have fun learning together!"
