Materials and Prep
- Computer or tablet with internet access
- Paper and pencil
- Coloring materials (crayons, colored pencils, markers)
Prior knowledge required: Basic understanding of the ocean and its importance.
Activities
-
Watch a video about ocean zones:
- Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7b6gN2Kg8H4
- Take notes on the different zones and their characteristics.
-
Create an ocean zones coloring page:
- Draw a large ocean scene on a piece of paper.
- Divide the ocean into different zones (e.g., sunlight zone, twilight zone, midnight zone, abyssal zone).
- Color each zone using appropriate colors to represent its characteristics (e.g., blue for sunlight zone, darker shades for deeper zones).
-
Write a short description of each ocean zone:
- Using your notes from the video and your coloring page as a reference, write a few sentences describing each zone and its unique features.
Second Grade Talking Points
- "The ocean is divided into different zones based on how deep they are."
- "The sunlight zone is the top layer of the ocean where most plants and animals live. It gets a lot of sunlight."
- "The twilight zone is a little deeper and it starts to get darker there. Some animals have special adaptations to survive in this zone."
- "The midnight zone is even deeper and it's very dark there. Animals in this zone have special adaptations to live without sunlight."
- "The abyssal zone is the deepest part of the ocean. It's very cold and there is a lot of pressure. Only a few animals can survive in this zone."
