Objective
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to understand how numbers relate to each other in addition and subtraction by combining and separating, and comparing collections.
Materials and Prep
Materials: Counting objects like toy cars, blocks, or candies.
Prep: Make sure the student is familiar with counting numbers up to 10.
Activities
1. Combine and Separate: Use the counting objects to show addition by combining two sets of objects and subtraction by taking away some objects.
2. Comparing Collections: Line up two sets of objects and compare which set has more or less. Practice using words like "more", "less", "equal".
Talking Points
- "Let's pretend we have 2 toy cars here and 3 toy cars there. If we put them together, how many toy cars do we have in total?"
- "Now, let's say we have 5 candies, and I take away 2 candies. How many candies are left?"
- "Look at these blocks. Which group has more blocks? The one on the left or the one on the right?"
- "Can you show me a group of objects that has less than this group of objects?"
